Description
Kentstown Glebe in Kentstown is an elegant and substantial Georgian residence dating from the 1790's. It is situated on beautiful private grounds of circa 14 acres with an enclosed courtyard and stables. It is positioned in a peaceful country setting, yet only 300 yards from Kentstown village. Recent History Kentstown Glebe was, from 1974 until 2010, home to Amedo Guillet, Italy's most decorated war hero and retired ambassador. In 1974, having spent 19 years as an Italian Ambassador on a number of postings, Armedo and his wife Beatrice retired to Ireland and lived in Kentstown Glebe, which they had lovingly restored. The man known around Kentstown as “Ambassador” was a keen sportsman with numerous triumphs at showjumping and eventing competitions but he was also a soldier. He had a distinguished military career and served in the Italian army in Ethiopia in 1936 and also in the Spanish Civil War. On the eve of World War Two, in Italian East Africa, he set up a formidable native cavalry force of 800 horsemen and in February 1941 on the Eritrean Lowlands, he commanded a cavalry charge against the British Army. This was to be the last cavalry charge the British Army ever had to face in war. After his army career, Amedo served as Italian Ambassador to Egypt, Yemen, Jordan, Morocco, India and also at the United Nations in New York. His love of hunting first brought him to Ireland and to Kentstown Glebe, where he hunted with the Tara Harriers and the Meath Hounds. He was also a member of the Royal Dublin Society since 1976. Location Kentstown Glebe is superbly located on the edge of Kentstown village in Co. Meath, just off the R153, 11km from Navan and 17km from Ashbourne. Driving time to Dublin is circa 35 minutes with a choice of two motorways, the M2 or M3, connecting with the M50 and Dublin Airport. Kentstown has seen much development over the last number of years and now has a thriving local community. The property is also in the vicinity of the internationally renowned Boyne Valley, which is host to a number of famous archaeological sites including Neolithic tombs at Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth and which attract thousands of tourists annually. The sporting enthusiast is well placed with a range of top quality amenities on the doorstep. There is horse racing held at Navan, Fairyhouse and at Dundalk where this stadium also hosts greyhound racing. The keen huntsman has a choice of packs in the Louth and Meath Foxhounds, the Fingal Harriers and the Ward Union. Primary and secondary schools serve the area.
