History & Background: Rathconnell Court and the earlier Rathconnell Castle stand as silent sentinels to one of the most turbulent chapters in Irish history. In 1642, it became the backdrop to a fierce skirmish during the Cromwellian invasion, where Irish Confederate forces, weakened by disunity and poor supplies, made a valiant but ill-fated stand against the advancing Puritan army. Led by Sir James Dillon, the defenders established a garrison at the castle, but due to miscommunication and alleged betrayal, their efforts ended in tragic loss. The battle saw the fall of noblemen and seasoned soldiers—including the gallant Captain Brien, a former Roundhead turned Confederate hero—whose decapitated head was paraded as a trophy in Dublin. The British Forces were led by Sir Richard Greville and Rathconnell Castle subsequently became the seat of the Adams Family. The original tower type castle which is next to Rathconnell Church & Graveyard, was replaced in the early 1800’s by Rathconnell Court, a Georgian Gothic Style Period Residence. Despite the devastation, the site endures as a powerful symbol of Irish resistance, sacrifice, and resilience. Today, Rathconnell Court and its surrounding ancient woodlands offer a rare opportunity to own a property steeped in legend and heritage, where the echoes of the past still whisper through the trees. Directions: From Mullingar take the N52 Delvin Road, after crossing the N4 Mullingar Bypass, continue c.500m and take the 2nd turn right and the property is straight-ahead. The auctioneer assumes the bidder is bidding for himself/herself. If the bidder intends to purchase a Lot in a name other than his or her personal name, arrangements must be made with the auctioneers in advance. By registering you are deemed to have accepted the terms and conditions of the auction and irrevocably authorise us, as agents for the vendor, to sign the completed Contract for Sale on your behalf. Deposit: A deposit of €20,000 is required in order to bid and this is payable in advance of the auction by online bank transfer. Our bank details will be provided to you at registration. The successful bidder’s deposit will become non-refundable as soon as the property is sold and a binding Contract is entered into and the agents are hereby authorised to sign the Contract for Sale on your behalf. The deposit payable on the signing of the Contract is 10% of the purchase price.
