Description
The upcoming sale of The Winthrop Arcade presents a unique opportunity to acquire a part of Ireland’s retail history. As the first retail Arcade built in Ireland, this is the jewel in Cork’s retail crown. HISTORY The iconic Winthrop Arcade opened in March 1926, connecting Winthrop Street with Oliver Plunkett Street, Cork’s prime retail area. Winthrop Arcade was designed by the celebrated Architects Levie & Chillingworth, who were responsible for some of the city’s landmark commercial premises. Their work includes the Roches Stores building, Eagle Printing Works, Beamish & Crawford Brewery, Odlums building and the redesign of the Victoria and Imperial Hotels. An article in the Cork Examiner dated 8th March 1926 highlighted the exceptional materials used in the construction of the Arcade, including marble, mosaic, mahogany, oxidised copper and decolite. DESCRIPTION Architecturally, the Arcade conforms with Tudor style externally and little has changed since it was constructed. Internally the elegant art deco style is reminiscent of the wonderful European arcades of the period. Almost all of the original architectural features are retained, in particular the glass dome, mahogany shop fronts and bronze display windows. Connecting the two primary retail streets in the heart of Cork city, the arcade retains all its original charm and elegance. The Winthrop Arcade was originally configured as 12 retail units. The expansion of a number of tenant businesses has resulted in the current seven unit layout which is home to some of Cork’s best known and well established independent retailers, including Best of Buds, Monreal, Cocoa Chocolateria and Joe Bros. Note: This sale includes 9 Robert Street, a semi-independent building to the main premises.
