Description
Surrounded on all sides by a curtilage of mature trees, Clonskeagh Castle is a hidden gem. This castellated dwelling residence is tucked away off Whitebeam Road on an elevated site, and enjoys privacy from surrounding neighbours. Clonskeagh Castle was built in c. 1789 as a suburban retreat for Henry Jackson, ironfounder, and prominent member of the United Irishmen. He purchased land measuring approx. 41 acres and carefully chose the position on which to build, settling on the south west corner of the site which was perched above the natural level of the river bank. This allowed the main rooms of the house to enjoy spectacular views over the countryside and towards the Dublin mountains. Having been forced into exile to the United States before the 1798 Rebellion. Jackson relinquished ownership to George Thompson in 1811, The Thompson family extended the castle, adding two, three storey towers to accommodate his large family. Clonskeagh Castle remained in that family for 123 years, after which it was purchased by T & A Crampton in 1934.
Crampton went on to build the beautiful redbrick houses that now stand on Whitethorn, Whitebeam and Maple Road.
Clonskeagh Castle has been in the ownership of the same family since 1992 and what a home to grow up in! A sense of history pervades every room, with the added excitement of secret stairwells and an underground tunnel what childhood dreams are made of.
The exquisite home is laid out over approx. 6,670sqft/620sqm (including one bedroom apartment) of exceptional accommodation with a gracious entrance hallway offering access to all the elegant reception rooms at ground level. Upstairs a wonderful split landing offers an abundance of bedroom accommodation to the front and rear of the property and concealed staircases lead to further rooms at the top of the house, ideal for use as home office or study area. A more recent addition to this stunning home is a one bedroom self-contained apartment at garden level which is beautifully presented and an excellent opportunity for extra income or for use as guest/au pair accommodation. There is also a large amount of storage and cellar space available in the basement, which also offers potential for further development (subject to planning permission).
Clonskeagh Castle is set on wonderful mature gardens measuring approx.0.5 acre and boasts excellent, private parking for several cars. Ideally located in the heart of Clonskeagh, there is a wealth of educational, recreational and shopping amenities nearby. Some of Dublin's best schools are within easy reach including Gonzaga, St. Killians, Alexandra College, Muckross Park, The Teresian School, Mount Anville School, St Michael's College and UCD. The city centre is approximately 2.5 miles from the property. The villages of Donnybrook, Ranelagh and Dundrum are all within easy access with a host of stylish shops and eateries. Accommodation
