History:The 40 bed Hospital opened on 20th of March 1847 and was under the control of Dr Thomas Taylor. The building was constructed during Famine times as the hospital for the nearby Workhouse (which was located on the site of the current community hospital). Once the Famine passed the hospital was commandeered by the British Army and used as a military barracks up until the War of Independence in 1921. After Independence the Irish Free State army then took up occupation until 1929. After 1929, ownership of the building passed to a number of owners.
