Description

Description Are you in the search for a substantial private located period home with great style with land and bordering a fishing river in the Northwest of Ireland? Drumlease Glebe is on its edge of its next chapter. Steeped in History the property was built in 1834 by Owen Wynne for the rectors in Church of Ireland, Dromahair village, Co Leitrim. Over 800 Glebe Houses were built around Ireland in the course of the 18th and 19th Centuries. For the clergy, this was a substantial distance from the parish church and village. Glebes were generally allocated to the church by the state and many in rural areas included associated glebe land, which were intended to supplement the low incomes of the clergy, who could farm or let them. Drumlease Glebe House had such land attached to it in Conaghil townland. It was a substantial residence with 9 bedrooms. It was sold by the clergy in the forties and since has had an illustrious number of owners. Late 60’s early 70’s, a couple called Mr & Mrs Ellis, an ex colonel used it as their private residence and sold some of the land to the State Forestry Coillte, to help maintain the house Don Wall and family from England ran a Lough Gill Horse drawn Caravan holiday company until from 1971-1980. He also built the swimming pool currently on the property Vernon family (party of the Guinness Family) ran it as an upmarket boutique country guest house in the early 1980s and was listed in the Blue Book of Ireland - a collection of Irish country house hotels, manor houses, castles and restaurants Barbara and Andrew Greenstein (from New York) ran a discerning establishment in the 1980s and received excellent reviews by the Michelin Guide and Egon Ronay until their return to New York around 1993. Whilst they owned it, President Regan visited Ireland and it came 3rd place in the list for President Regan to stay for his visit. The present owners Marita and Nick Quigley bought the property. Marita spend her teenage years working in the country house and had very fond memories. Their love affair for this magnificent home saved the property from further decline. Extensive renovations including new roofs, floors were carried out. The couple now residing in London feel that they have brought the property to the next stage for new owners to continue the internal fit out to one’s own taste and finish. Over 6.300 square feet of floor space the property has huge private and commercial potential. As one approaches the property after a private drive through state forestry, the main residence emerges with its imposing limestone facade, characterised by a single-bay projecting porch and large picture windows. The Glebe with two floors over basement, coach and servant quarters over 2 floors now need an internal finish to reflect the return to its former glory. The court yard to the North would make an ideal setting for boutique weddings. As an exotic feature an outdoor swimming pool was added in the 70s. The walled garden and a large stable/agricultural building hidden away and over 8.7 acre with river frontage complete the property.
