Description

DESCRIPTION Just fifteen minutes from Clifden, but in a beautiful world of its own, Errislannan Manor was built as a hunting lodge in the 18th Century. Extended since then, and updated, it is now a comfortable six bedroomed home, overlooking a trout lake, close to the sea, and sheltered by mature woodlands. This idyllic spot, is also home to the Connemara branch of the Irish Pony Club, and is a member of the Royal Horticultural Society of Ireland's Irish gardens for charity scheme. Originally a farm, the land has been carefully shaped and maintained, with 3,000 trees being planted in the1850s, and a walled garden created to grow vegetables and kitchen herbs. More or less derelict by the 1950s, the present owner's family restored and renovated, creating a wonderful home that has been cherished by the family. The house is full of lovely stories, such as the arrival of electricity in the 1970s the children formerly reading by gas lamp, and by candlelight upstairs. Errislannan Manor is also at the heart of the local community. The riding school itself began as a way to help raise money to re-roof the local church. Now it is a thriving centre, offering lessons, livery, therapeutic riding and trekking. Connemara ponies are famed throughout the world, said to have inherited their wit and beauty from Spanish and Arab horses shipwrecked nearby, when the Armada was blown off course in the time of Sir Francis Drake. Whether you choose to maintain a riding establishment, or simply revel in all the beauty this unique area has to offer, Errislannan Manor makes for an ideal base in this magical spot. ERRISLANNAN MANOR A classic hunting lodge, Errislannan Manor has been extended in keeping with the original design. The reception hall to the right of the property has a welcoming fireplace, and this sense of charm extends throughout with thick walls, deeply recessed sash windows, ceiling coving and architraves at ground level, and gently sloping ceilings above. Downstairs there is a study with a bay window, a very spacious drawing room with a solid wood floor and an open fire. This opens on to a newer sunroom that gives views over the lake. Beyond this is a dual aspect dining room, leading to the kitchen with a warming range. To the rear are a pantry, larder and WC, while there is also a back kitchen that doubles up as a boot and dog room, and a fuel store. Upstairs, there are six bedrooms, five of which are doubles. There are two bathrooms, and the master bedroom is dual aspect with an open fire. In all, Errislannan Manor is rich with all the atmosphere you could imagine from a traditional Irish hunting lodge of the period with modern conveniences added, waiting for the next chapter in its long and charming history. GROUNDS AND FACILITIES The c220 acres of gardens and grounds at Errislannan Manor have been gently shaped and shepherded since the 1850s, when some 3,000 trees were planted to shelter the house. This opens the house up to a lovely vista onto a trout lake, with the mountains and moors made famous by Paul Henry beyond. The planting and aspect also helps to create a microclimate in which camellias, azaleas, rhododendrons and montbretia thrive, with swathes of daffodils and bluebells in spring and early summer. The mature gardens arenexceptional, and are currently open to the public under the Irish Gardens for Charity scheme. The gardens have been beautifully and extensively catalogued by the current owners, in memory of the gardeners who have loved them so much. The riding centre at Errislannan Manor consists of the 'Horsey Hut' reception area which has a classroom, kitchen and WC facilities. Past the house and up to the yard you arrive at The Steading which contains the office, boot room, and arena observation area and jump storage below. The Stable Yard has two tack rooms, loose boxes, cow bars, grooming area, drying room, carriage house and bathroom. A small stairs leads to the two bedroom staff flat above with kitchen, bathroom and seating areas. A second yard, the Back Haggard, contains the Hangar for storing machinery, a loose box, hen house, and more grooming areas. Manure heap and stone built hay barn complete the picture along with an outdoor manege. Part of the beauty of the site, from an equestrian point of view, is the available grazing, plus the scope to hack or trek for miles, on your own land, in one of the most celebrated scenic parts of Ireland. Then you can return to your own haven, where both horses and humans can relax after a well spent day in happy warmth and comfort. LOCATION Connemara is famous across the world as being one of Ireland's most scenic, and popular spots.
