FISHERMAN'S COTTAGE
Surrounded by unspoilt coastal scenery stands these charming period stone-built cottages, exuding character and ambiance.
Cottage 1
The main residence is entered via a porch, ideal for discarding sand covered shoes and swimming apparel. This leads directly to the heart of the cottage.
The main living area is bright and spacious with flagstone floor and vaulted ceilings utilising exposed beams salvaged from the Cadbury Factory in London. The centrepiece of the room is the original inglenook fireplace, fitted with a modern multi-fuel stove, with the supporting beam having all the signs of timber salvaged from a long forgotten ship wrecked in the bay. Steps down from the living/dining area lead to the kitchen with south facing window overlooking the gardens and the water beyond, bespoke units, granite countertops, Belfast sink and electric AGA range. A mezzanine level, above the kitchen, is the perfect office space with sea views from picture window.
Off the main living area are two large bedrooms and a family bathroom. The main bedroom benefits from a large window with wonderful views over the garden and sea beyond. The tastefully decorated bathroom has a walk-in double shower with steamer and electric underfloor heating.
Cottage 2
The front door of the guest cottage leads directly to the main living area which again exudes character with flagstone floor and inglenook fireplace with exposed stone. The vaulted ceiling and skylight create a bright and spacious living area. The kitchen, located off the main living area includes bespoke units, granite countertops, Belfast sink and electric AGA range. There are two spacious bedrooms and family bathroom with walk-in shower.
THE GROUNDS
The property is set in a true oasis on the side of an ancient ravine which provided shelter for the inhabitants of the village in the past and whose shelter has allowed for the creation of a magical garden facing the Atlantic Ocean.
Entrance pillars above the beach mark the start of the property with the beach of Simon's Cove and slipway, ideal for launching a kayak and exploring the coast (there is a safe, secluded swimming cove approx. 150 meters away). Steps from a private parking area lead to the gardens and houses above.
The terraced gardens are awash with creativity and a joy to explore. Stone walls and stone built furniture utilises stone quarried and gathered from around the property. There are a myriad of seating areas and patio areas on the waterfront, ideal for entertaining or from which to enjoy the tranquil surrounds. Further along, on an elevated position with sea views, between the two houses is another patio area with stone built barbeque.
The gardens are full of colour with a variety of trees, shrubs, flowers, an orchard with apple, pear and crab apple trees and lawns. The garden also has the benefit of a large timber storage shed.
HISTORY
Much of what is known of Simon's Cove is passed down through local lore. A small fishing village, which in c.1840 comprised 4 cottages and later by 1900 had increased to 6 cottages was once said to be home to 80 people. The earliest references to Simon's Cove relate to shipwrecks including the barque, Mary, enroute from Maranham in Brazil to Liverpool in 1839, laden with valuable goods, which the country men had assembled to salvage before the authorities arrived. In 1882 we are told that there were 63 boats of all descriptions operating from Simon's Cove to the Galley Head primarily fishing mackerel and herring and selling their catch in nearby Ring. By the late 19th century, the livelihoods of fishermen from places like Simon's Cove was in permanent decline.
Each cove had a name attached to it with Dog's Cove, Bathing Cove (still known as a safe swimming cove today) and Barrel Cove all located within 350 meters of Simon's Cove. Local lore attaches the name Simon to a Simon McCarthy Reagh, part of the McCarthy Reagh dynasty who held large parts of Carbery during the medieval period but who has now been lost to history.
LOCATION
Simon's Cove is surrounded by some of West Cork's finest scenery and is located between Clonakilty and Courtmacsherry.
To the west is the popular market town of Clonakilty offering an array of shops, cafes, restaurants, a cinema and golf at Lisselane.
To the east is Courtmacsherry noted for its sea activities from the local pier including sailing and whale watching, pubs and restaurants. The picturesque walking trails of the Seven Heads Peninsula take in the nearby scenic coastal path which loops back to the village.
Further opportunities for sea-swimming at the renowned Inchydoney Beach while nearby beaches include Dunworley, Moloney Strand, Broad Strand and Blind Strand.
Heading east towards Kinsale, you'll find beaches at Harbour View, Coolmain, Howe Strand, Garretstown and more with the area famed for sailing, fishing, surfing, kitesurfing, kayaking and other water sports, while the Old Head is one of the most renowned golf courses in the world.
