It gives a wonderful sense of arrival and sets the tone for this superb property. Located c. 30 minutes from Cork City Centre, c. 20 minutes from Blarney and c. 40 minutes from Cork Airport. History of The Glebe The Glebe was built in 1752 on twenty acres of land acquired by the Church of Ireland for the purpose of building a house, church, and mill. In pre-Reformation times the bishop had a manor house and extensive lands in Donoughmore. In 1591 the parish with its old monastic church was confiscated in the name of Queen Elizabeth, which left the Catholic population without a church for almost two hundred and fifty years. The Healy Clan were the Church Guardians up to the time of confiscation; it was they who kept and guarded the Shrine of St Lachteen’s Hand (now in the treasure room of the National Museum in Dublin) referred to by Professor Mc Allister as “the most important of reliquaries”. The new spiritual leaders appointed to Donoughmore were either British or graduates of Trinity College, Dublin. For example, Rev John Torway appointed in 1685 was a native of Devonshire, Rev. Matthew Jones, brother of bishop Edward Jones, Protestant bishop of Cloyne, was a native in Wales. Rev. Horatio Townsend, who built “The Glebe” was a native of Castletownsend: his wife was Mary Hungerford from the Manor of Hungerford in the South of England. The house cost, what for that time must have been a very considerable sum of money, £443. After Rev. Townsend as rector came Rev. Richard Bullen, a direct relative of Ann Boleyn, wife of Henry VIII. Other interesting occupants of “The Glebe” were father and son; Rev. John Kennedy resigned from the parish in 1801 in favour of his son, Rev. Thomas Kennedy, whose wife came from Yorkshire. For various reasons the next rector of Donoughmore is of interest, Rev. Joseph Rogerson Cotter was a direct descendant of Sir James Cotter of Carrigtwohill who fought beside King James at the Battle of the Boyne. He it was who extended “The Glebe” to its present size to accommodate his family of nine sons and nine daughters. He was rector during the Great Famine, and it was at that time that the then Parish Priest of Donoughmore wrote into the Baptismal Register the poignant note: “There died forever of fever and famine, between November 1846 and February 1847, over fourteen hundred of the people of this parish and one priest, Fr Dan. Horgan”. Rev. Cotter published extensively and became involved in controversy with Bishop Coppinger of Cloyne. His publication “True Catholicity” was in reply to Bishop Coppinger. This exquisite property boasts several outbuildings that can be readily transformed into apartments to accommodate additional guests. “The Glebe” offers its own private tranquil haven, providing a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
